Sudhan history

Sudhans are one of the major tribes from the districts of Poonch, Sudhanoti, Bagh and Kolti in Kashmir.
Lt. Col. J.M. Wikeley in his book Punjabi Musalmans wrote, "The Sudhans have pride of race and look on themselves as superior to any of the other tribes of Poonch Kashmir". "Sudhuns are mainly settled in the region from Kotli to Sudhan Gali of present Azad Jammu & Kashmir and having the population of 500,000”[1]. Apart from Indian Kashmir Sudhans are also settled in different cities of Pakistan mainly in Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Kahuta, Murree and Kotli Sattian.
Rawalakot, in the Poonch District and Pallandri, in the Sudhanoti Districts of Azad Kashmir are major Sudhan strongholds. Internationally Sudhans are settled all over the world and have large communities in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. A significant Sudhan diaspora is now present in Australia, Denmark, Norway, Germany and Belgium. Sudhans are also found in large numbers in Middle East and South Africa.
Major G. Carmichael Smyth in his book A History of the Reigning Family of Lahore states: "About the year 1832, several independent hill-tribes inhabiting the north western regions of the Punjaub [Punjab] were reduced into subjection to the Lahore state. These were the Doondh, Soodhun (Sudhan), Suthee, Hoteels(Muhgals) and Murdiall(Mughals) tribes. The Doondh tribe lived chiefly on the banks of the Jhelum...was in number about fifty or sixty thousand... The Soodhun tribe inhabited a large tract on the eastern bank of the same river opposite the country of the Doondhs, and numbered about forty thousand souls."
In Punjabi Musalmans by Lt. Col. J.M. Wikeley: "Male population.— 25,300. (Census 1838). The Sudhanoti tahsil of Poonch is the home of the Sudhans, but they spread also into the Havali, Bagh and Kotli tehsils and a few even are to be met with across the Jhelum in the Kahuta tahsil of Rawalpindi... The Sudhans are the most important tribe of Poonch."

Theories of origins
The history of the Sudhans is replete with conflicting controversies. Whether they came from Ghazni or Kandhar or their ancestor converted to Islam may never be resolved, but it is a fact that they are a distinct tribe whose history demands detailed research.
There are two different theories about the origin of Sudhan; Afghan Pathan and Brahmin ancestry.
Afghan Ancesty or Rajput Ancestry:'
According to Major (Retd) Tilla Mohammad, now deceased, a political leader in Peshawar, in his books on the Sudhan tribe stated:
"Sudhans had immigrated to Azad Kashmir from Ghazni and Kandahar, Afghanistan, during the 14th century."
Major (Retd) Tilla Muhammad was himself from Rehara, Kashmir and his ancestors had migrated to Peshawar from Kashmir.
Some Sudhans adopted the name Sadozai, after the publication of the articles by Major (Retd) Tila Muhammad.
Some members of the Sudhan tribe claim that the Sudhan tribe are descendendts from Afghan Pathan tribes; this may just be due to the fact that Ahmed Shah Durrani's empire consisted of what is now known as Kashmir and the Sudhans just a by-product of the subsequent invasions. However none of this been ascertained by historical or genealogical proof. The only evidence given to this theory is through oral traditions.[2][3]
Brahmin ancestry: According to Col. (Rtd) Dr. Khalil Khan now deceased, a Dermatologist from Rawalakot, Azad Kashmir. "Sudhans were converted to Islam by Aurangzeb Bahadur Alamgir the sixth Mughal ruler".[4]

By origin the Mohyals are certainly Saraswat and still take wives from that group in Gujarat, while in Rawalpindi the five superior sections (Sudhan, Sikhan, Bhaklal, Bhog and Kali) of the Bunjahi Sarsuts used to give daughters Bhimwal(Bhibhal) Mohyal Sarsuts and occasionally to other Mohyal sections.[5]

The name Sudhan also occurs in the Mahabharata mythology, as a descendant of the vedic rishi Angiras, this is also further corroborated by the reference above, although there is no reference of the tribe itself claiming descent from the mentioned Angiras's son Sudhan. Also in the Gazetteer of Rawalpindi, there appears no mention of the Sudhan's Mohyal or Brahmin connection. There are Hindu Sudhans, mostly living in India-controlled Kashmir, and Sikh Sudhans in Indian Punjab and Kashmir
Castes and Tribes of Poonch by Muhammad Din Folk “Sudhan is shown as one of the 12 communities in Hazara during the Vedic age. Sodhan is described as a Rajput tribe. Sud race is settled in East Punjab”.
Reigning Family of Lahore by Major G. Carmichael Smyth “Sud were originally called suwdik, one of the nomadic tribes who settled in Iran in 900 BC. The name changed to Sogdian-Sulik-Sud due to dialects of Chines, Sogdian & Punjabi writers. Sudrakas (sud race in South Punjab) fought battle with Alexander the Great and gave Alexander a tough time in Sogdian (Summarkand)”.
The Sudhan Revolt (The News 19 October 1997.) By Sardar M. Saleem Khan. "Sudhan, and important and high caste of Chihalis-Rajputs (Aryans)".
Gazetteer of Kashmir & Ladakh (1890) "Lehr Muni (ancestor of Sudhan) son of Bawa Muna (Chief of Katas Tirath) migrated from Katas to Poonch in 11th century. One of his descendants Sudh Sain/Pal is the patriarch of Sudhan. Sudhan Chander Bansi dynasty ruled from the capital of Sudhnuti. Sudhan are Muslims as well as Hindus".
DNA Research: A research project comprising DNA lineage study has been commenced to determine the ancestry of the Sudhans.

    1. You are fake, your ancestor adopted this name! original Sudhans are Pathans! Confusion of Sudhan’s existence in Jammu, Indian-controlled Kashmir

There are also few Sikh and Hindus living in Indian-controlled Kashmir, who claim to be Sudhan, but they are Not Sudhans, their ancestors were local Brahmans (Hindus) of Poonch, Sudhanoti, Bagh areas, who adopted (stolen) this Sudhan cast after 1947when they were forced to migrated during partion; they may adopted this name because they belonged to Sudhans dominated areas. They have dark olive skin and there are no qualities of original Sudhans (Pathans) found amongst them. Some of them accepted Islam and stayed in Poonch and Sudhanoti, and they are now known as Sheikhs/Shaikhs and in few areas they even adopted the Sudhan cast.

    2. You can't call anyone fake because they are not pathans.. Islam came to India much later.our ancestory is much older than the Islam came here.people in this region are nothing more than the converts from other religions to Islam in fact they still use the castes which belong to Hindus or Sikhs.

  13. HISTORY
The tribe links Afghanistan from where they moved to southern Poonch in Kashmir and they are same as Pathans (Pashtuns) of Afghanistan. They are decentents of Pathan; Nawab Jassi Khan and his battlion. It is said that some centuries ago Nawab Jassi Khan, who was chief of his family, battlelion first settled near Kotli, in the Murree hills. Another tribe held the opposite bank of the Jhelum and tyrannised over the Locals of Poonch Kashmir, who called in the Sudhans to their aid. The Sudhans having defeated the tribe, seized their country and named it Sudhanoti, it was at this time that they took the title of Sudhan, The Sudhanwhich has many meaning like (fair, just, brave, etc…) this name was an honorary name given to their Pathan ancestors; Nawab Jassi Khan and his battlelion. which they had earned as a compliment to their valour from the locals. In this period, they multiplied quickly and emerged into a strong and powerful tribe. Shrine of Jassi Khan can be found at Jessa Peer in Mang, Azad Kashmir and Sudhan betka organized by Jassi Khan can be found at Holar in Kotli, Azad Kashmir. Nawab Jassi Khan is also considered to be the founder of Sudhanoti region, he named the Sudhanoti.

According to most Sudhans, even, Sardar Ibrahim Khan (Azad Kashmir’s founder) mentioned in his book; Nawab Jassi Khan belonged Sadduzai tribe of Afghanistan.

While some Sudhans say that; Nawab Jassi Khan and his battlion were from different Afghan Pathan tribes.

  14. Agreed with Arbaz Khan, primarily all the Sudhans of Pakistan and Azad Kashmir are Sudozais. They have a distinct history like the rest of Pathan tribes of Pakistan and Afghanistan. The great grand father Jassi Khan came from Ghanzi Afghanistan and settled in Poonch. The word 'Sudhan' is basically the title awarded due the valor and bravery which was shown by Jassi khan and company in saving the local population from the oppression of Ghakhar tribe of that time. Gradually, all Sudozais adopted the title Sudhan with pride, but never forgot the roots.
I would also like to draw the attentions towards the difference between the descendants of Ahmad Shah Abdali and Nawab Jassi Khan. Indeed Nawab Jassi is a historic personality who was born at the end of 13th century, while Ahmad Shah Abdali is a lateral phenomenon. Both are known as Sudozai, but it should be remembered that in actual, the ancestors of both the personalities were different. Nawab Jassi's ancestor's name was "Saad Ullah Khan from Utmanzai branch, while Ahmad Shah Abdali was the son 'Asad Ullah Khan' from Popalzai branch. So, both are famous as Sudozai, but are different.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sudhans (also known as Sudhuzai) is one of the major tribes from the districts of Poonch, Sudhanoti, Bagh and Kotli in Azad Kashmir, allegedly originating from Pashtun areas.[1]

    Origin
The tribe claims an Afghan ancestry.[2] According to Syed Ali, Sudhans have a Pashtun descent and moved to the Poonch district of Kashmir region some centuries ago.[3] About 40,000–60,000 Sudhans were recruited and served in the British Indian Army during the First and Second World Wars.[3][4]

    Rebellion against Kashmir State
The Sudhan tribe has been described as "a main and martial tribe of dissident Poonch" by Christopher Snedden, a political analyst. Sardar Ibrahim Khan, formerly a little-known barrister, was among the Sudhan people who rose to significance from 1947 as a result of a campaign and later rebellion against the Maharaja of the princely state of Kashmir and Jammu, Hari Singh. Khan led a significant faction of the Muslim Conference in their demands that Singh should join with Pakistan rather than accede to India. Together with Muslims from Bagh, it was the Sudhans who were at the heart of this campaign.[5] The rebels were directed by the Pakistan Army, and with the support of Pashtun tribal lashkars sent in from the Khyber and Waziristan tribal agencies[6] and although Kashmir state acceded to India, they were able to 'liberate' a portion called Azad Kashmir (Free Kashmir/ controlled by Pakistan).[citation needed]

Together with the Rajputs, it is the Sudhans who dominate the politics of Azad Kashmir in the present day, although the Gujjar community is probably the largest among the population.[7]

The word sudhan is honorary not a caste. its sanskrit word used by local people. yes we were migrants. we were not having our own lands. in 1931 we got the claim. but the people of here were having their claim which is still in record of Govt.

  27. I am a Sudhan from Rawalakot side living in Islamabad. but i am dead sure that Sudhan is a caste of Brahmin or Rajput family.based on following reasons.
1- No written history available to confirm Sudhan as Pasthun.
2- No record in Afghanistan whether Sudhan was a tribe from
Afghan Lineage where one can find all the tribe History in
    Kabul Library.
3-The life style of Sudhan is completley different from
Pasthun Families, and much similar to pahari tribes of
Murree, Kotli Sattiyan and other Abbasi Rajput tribes.
4- Pathan never likes to be controlled by a superior authority
like Boss hence loves own business and self dignity culture
    and language.
5- Sudhan always loves jobs particularly govt ones happy to be
a white color well mannered high up in Bureatic attitude
willing to change his culture language and dressing as per
    market requirement.
